Bob Johnson was a pretty amazing player. He was only in the majors for 13 seasons, but he would rack up eight All-Star selections and would rate MVP votes in over a half dozen seasons. He was a slugger--288 career HR--and got on base at a .383 clip.

Johnson was 35 and was married with children when World War 2 broke out, so he was never at a great risk to be drafted. His numbers where strong during the war, which should be expected considering the sub-par competition. But you cant say he was really padding his stats--from 1933 to 1940 he carried an OPS+ of 139, and from 1941-1945 he had an OPS plus of 139.

That said, as the war ended he saw the writing on the wall. With the major leagues about to be flush again with young talent, he gracefully retired from the game.
