1987 Topps Cleveland Indians

Series 1,2,Traded (31 cards)

  • Wax: 36 packs per box, 17 cards plus one stick of bubble gum per pack (MSRP: $0.40). 20 boxes per case.

  • Cello: 24 packs per box, 31 cards plus one stick of bubble gum per pack (MSRP: $0.69). 16 boxes per case.

  • Racks: 24 pack per box, 49 cards per pack. Six boxes per case.

  • Jumbos: 101 cards plus one stick of gum per pack

1987 Topps is a 792-card set. Considered one of the more memorable card sets of the era, the wood-grain design evokes the 1962 Topps set. Unfortunately having been printed at the beginning of The Junk Wax Era, 87 Topps was one of the most overproduced cards sets of all time.

7th in the AL East

Sports Illustrated famously called this team the "the best in the American League" in its season preview. They would lose 101 games. The high point of the season was 01 May, when the Tribe was 9-14. They would never even have a .400 winning % the rest of the campaign.

 

  • Joe Carter (32), Brook Jacoby (32) and Cory Snyder (33) all had 30+ HR seasons.

  • Brett Butler would end the season with a .825 OPS. He would leave via free agency after the season.

  • Carter (31), Julio Franco (32) and Butler (33) all had 30+ SB seasons.

  • No starter would have more than 7 wins or lower than 4.78 ERA>

  • On 9 April, Phil Niekro and Stever Carlton each pitched in the same game. Its the only time in baseball history that two 300 game winners pitched for the same team in the same game.
