1956 Topps Cleveland Indians

(20 cards)

The 1956 Topps Baseball set consists of a 340 cards. The set was quite similar in design to the prior year’s entry, that full-color artwork that features each player "In Action" adjacent to his portrait – with some portraits identical to those used not only in 1955 but also 1954. The player's name and team affiliation appear at the top left corner. The 1956 Topps also includes team cards introduced as part of a regular set, two unnumbered checklist cards as well as cards representing league presidents William Harridge and Warren Giles. Card backs for #s 1-180 can be found with either white or gray cardboard, with collectors leaning toward the gray backs for cards #1-100 and white backs from #101-180.

Yet another set with no Indians that are particulary expensive.

88-66 (Pythagorean 91-63)

2th in the American League

As was often the case in the 50's, the Indians would finish second to the Yankees. Attendance dropped to the lowest point in 11 seasons, and team legends Bob Feller and Al Rosen would retire at the end of the season.

  • Vic Wertz, Al Rosen, Gene Woodling and Rocky Colavito would all have 100 or higher OPS+

  • Vic Wertz was the teams best hitter, with a line of .264/.364/.509 with 32 HR.

  • Colavito, in his first real season, hit .276/.372/.531 with 21 HR in 322 at bats.

  • Al Smith, utility player, would have a fine season with 16 HR and 113 OPS+.

  • Rotation was, again, awesome:

    • Early Wynn: 20-9, 154 ERA+

    • Bob Lemon: 20-14, 139 ERA+

    • Herb Score: 20-9, 166 ERA+

    • Mike Garcia: 11-12, 111 ERA+
